Infrastructure for Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition

From the farm gate to the consumer, the ‘Cold Chain, Value Addition, and Preservation Infrastructure’ program provides integrated preservation infrastructure and cold chain facilities.

It builds infrastructure for the whole supply chain, including weighing, pre-chilling, grading, sorting, multi-product/multi-temperature cold storage, waxing facilities at the farm level, and portable cooling units for horticulture, meat, and poultry distribution, among other things.

Food processing/preservation capacity creation/expansion (Unit Scheme).

This program adds processing and preservation capacity, as well as modernization/expansion of existing food processing plants, in order to boost processing and add value, reducing waste. Individual units carry out processing activities that include a wide range of post-harvest processes that add value and extend shelf life, as well as specialized facilities for preserving perishables.

Cluster infrastructure for agro-processing.

This program creates shared facilities and contemporary infrastructure to encourage entrepreneurs to develop food processing businesses. It promotes entrepreneurs to establish food processing units using a cluster strategy, which involves connecting groups of farmers/producers to markets and processors via a well-equipped supply chain with contemporary infrastructure. Basic Enabling Infrastructure and Core Infrastructure/Common Facilities are the two basic components of every agro-processing cluster under this strategy.

Backward and forward linkages are created.

By decreasing supply chain gaps in terms of market linkages and raw material availability, this strategy delivers seamless and effective forward and backward integration for the processed food industry. Financial aid is provided for the establishment of collection centers/primary processing centers at farm gates, as well as contemporary retail outlets and refrigerated/insulated transportation connectivity.

Infrastructure for Food Safety and Quality Assurance

In the global market, food safety and quality have become a competitive advantage for food goods.

The government has provided financial assistance through this plan under the following two components to meet the goals of food safety and quality:

  • Food safety/quality management system based on HACCP/ISO standards.
  • Quality control/food testing laboratories are being established/upgraded.

Institutions and Human Resources

Research and Development — The government funds demand-driven R&D projects that benefit the food processing industry in terms of process and product development, enhanced packaging, efficient technologies, and value addition, among other things.

Promotional Activities – Organize, co-sponsor, and participate in all-India food processing seminars, fairs, workshops, and exhibitions to stimulate investments in the industry and raise awareness of the MoFPI’s programs.

Skill Development – Providing sector-specific trained personnel in various segments of the food processing industries, including floor level workers, packing, assembly line workers and operators, quality control supervisors, and so on.

Institutional Strengthening – The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) founded the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management (NIFTEM) and the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT).

These institutions provide B. Tech., M. Tech., and PhD programs, as well as R&D initiatives in the fields of food technology and food processing.

PM Kisan SAMPADA Yojana Benefits

The PM Kisan SAMPADA Yojana will use Rs.31,400 crore in investment to handle 334 lakh MT of agro-produce worth Rs.1,04,125 crore, helping 20 lakh farmers and creating 5,30,500 indirect and direct jobs in the country.

The PM Kisan SAMPADA Yojana provides investors with a capital subsidy in the form of grants-in-aid ranging from 35 percent to 75 percent of the eligible project cost up to the maximum specified limit for undertaking logistic projects, infrastructure, and the establishment of food processing units in India.
